We’ve finally got a console release date for CrossCode

Matt RyanBy Matt RyanJune 10, 2020

It’s been more than a year since the announcement of console versions of retro action RPG CrossCode, but we’ve finally got a release date. It’s getting a digital release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 9 July, followed by a retail release of the Switch and PS4 versions on 28 August.

Each platform will have its own exclusive questline and dungeon, culminating in a special boss fight. This goes for the PC version that’s already available, too, with the PC questline to be provided through an update. The developers, Radical Fish Games, have hinted that these quests might be “part something bigger…”.

As well as the standard retail console release in August, CrossCode is getting limited-edition SteelBook and Collector’s Editions for Switch, PS4, and PC through Strictly Limited Games later this year. The SteelBook Edition comes with both the SteelBook and a standard case with a reversible cover, and is limited to 3,000 copies worldwide for Switch, 3,000 for PC, and 2,000 for PS4.

The Collector’s Edition comes with the same SteelBook and reversible cover, as well as a Lea “Hi” keychain, hardcover “CrossCode Compendium’, 2-disc soundtrack, poster, sticker set, and Collector’s Edition box with magnetic lock. It’s limited to 2,000 copies worldwide for Switch, 1,500 for PS4, and 2,000 for PC.

CrossCode is a sci-fi action RPG inspired with 16-bit aesthetic inspired by SNES games and “butter-smooth physics” that form the basis of its puzzles and combat. It tells the story of Lea, a mute protagonist—actually mute, not just a silent hero trope—as she explores an MMO world in the distant future.

CrossCode originally came out for PC in 2018. There’s a free demo available on Steam, and a browser-based web demo, if you want to try it out ahead of the console release.
