Touken Ranbu Warriors is getting a Western release!

Matt RyanBy Matt RyanSeptember 25, 2021

It’s official: Touken Ranbu Warriors is getting an international release, with a simultaneous international launch planned for May 24, 2022 for Nintendo Switch.

Touken Ranbu Warriors is the latest Warriors series collaboration title, this time based on Touken Ranbu Online, a popular browser-based simulation game about collecting and training famous swords from throughout history that have taken the form of beautiful men—”Touken Danshi”. In the case of Touken Ranbu Warriors, 15 masterless Touken Danshi find themselves sent on a mission to the Sengoku era to stop an army of history revisionists from altering the course of Japan’s unification.

Touken Ranbu Warriors is being jointly developed by Warriors series creators Omega Force and Ruby Party, Koei Tecmo’s otome studio. Given Touken Ranbu‘s bishonen appeal among women, Ruby Party’s involvement makes sense, though it remains to be seen if there’ll be any otome elements in Touken Ranbu Warriors. Regardless, this will be the first time a Ruby Party game gets officially released in the west, and could hopefully pave the way for more localisations in future.

More details will be revealed during Tokyo Game Show, with an exclusive first look scheduled for Oct 2 at 11pm JST as part of the TGS2021 DMM Special Program. In the meantime, here’s a special presentation with some of the producers involved introducing the game and talking about how it came to be, and an overview from Koei Tecmo’s announcment:

Touken Ranbu Warriors features 15 characters from Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-, where famous swords take the form of warriors named Touken Danshi (swordsmen), and the elite fighters are sworn to protect history. In Touken Ranbu Warriors, members of Touken Danshi have been drifting through time without their master – the Saniwa – to lead them, when they are suddenly attacked by the fearsome History Retrograde Army (HRA). After the initial conflict, the Touken Danshi are approached by the Government of the Time, and sent on a mission into the war-torn Sengoku Era where the revision of Japanese history is already underway. Can the Touken Danshi heroes restore order while restoring the original timeline? The fierce but beautiful battles of the Touken Danshi are finally a reality!

The game is set to feature the electrifying musou action fans expect from a WARRIORS title including battling alongside partner characters and head-to-head duels against enemies! Touken Ranbu Warriors also features the “Honmaru,” the main base of our heroes. Here, you can freely place members of the Touken Danshi in order to get a glimpse of their daily lives that can only be experienced in this game.

Touken Ranbu Warriors is being developed for Nintendo Switch, with a a simultaneous international release planned for May 24, 2022.
