SaGa Frontier is the latest game to join Square Enix’s growing list of remasters of its classic games, with SaGa Frontier Remastered announced for a 2021 release for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.
Square Enix announced the remaster during a Romancing SaGa Re;universe livestream over the weekend, promising “updated graphics, events, cutscenes, enhancements (and a new protagonist!)”. You can get a glimpse of some of those updated features in the announcement trailer below.
Here’s the full announcement:
The 1998 PlayStation® classic is back: SaGa Frontier is being remastered for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, iOS, and Android – launching in Summer 2021!
The team of eight have returned – now with Fuse added as a playable character!
Choose your favorite character and embark on your own unique journey. Each of the eight characters have different goals and endings. Your choices will affect how events unfold using the Free-Form Scenario System. This in-depth system will allow you to manipulate and expand a story all your own.
Challenge yourself in nail-biting battles by using “glimmer” as well as learning new skills such as the ability to fire consecutive special attacks from multiple team members.
With beautiful graphics, as well as the addition of new events and features, SaGa Frontier Remastered is an experience not to be missed!

In recent years, Square Enix has shown a renewed interest in the long-dormant SaGa series. Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3—two games originally released for Super Famicom in the ’90s—both made their global debut on modern platforms in the last few years, alongside a Switch port of SaGa: Scarlet Grace. In December, Collection of SaGa will bring the original Game Boy trilogy to Switch; between that and this latest announcement of SaGa Frontier Remastered, Switch is only a couple of games away from having a full SaGa collection available.
