PlayStation 5 finally has a launch date and price

Matt RyanBy Matt RyanSeptember 17, 2020

We finally have a release date and price for the PlayStation 5. Sony’s new console launches in New Zealand (among other regions) on November 12, costing NZD $649.95 for the Digital Edition and $819.95 for the model that includes a disc drive.

The announcement came at the end of Sony’s PlayStation 5 showcase this morning. As well as New Zealand, the November 12 launch date applies to the Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The rest of the world will get it on November 19, with the exception of China, which is “still under investigation”.

Pre-orders opened today, but if you haven’t already ordered, you might be out of luck—the launch day allocation seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere. Some stores are reporting that they’re sold out of their entire 2020 stock and won’t get more until next year, at least for the Digital Edition.

To accompany the release date and price announcement, Sony also confirmed the launch day PlayStation 5 game line-up from SIE Worldwide Studios. The following will all release on November 12, alongside the PS5 itself:

    • Astro’s Playroom (Japan Studio) – pre-installed on all PS5 consoles
    • Demon’s Souls (Bluepoint Games / Japan Studio) – NZD $139.95 (RRP)
    • Destruction AllStars (Lucid Games / XDEV) – NZD $139.95 (RRP)
    • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Insomniac Games)- NZD $109.95 (RRP)
    • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition (Insomniac Games) – NZD $139.95 (RRP)
    • Sackboy: A Big Adventure (Sumo Digital / XDEV) – NZD $139.95 (RRP)

There’ll be a few third-party games available on day one, too, such as Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition and Gearbox Publishing’s action RPG Godfall. PlayStation Plus members will also get access to the PlayStation Plus Collection, a curated selection of PS4 games—playable on PS5—including Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, and Persona 5, among others.

Though the release date and price were obviously the major announcement out of this morning’s showcase, there were plenty of other exciting things on show, too. New game announcements included Final Fantasy XVI, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, Hogwarts Legacy, a new Five Nights At Freddy’s, and a teaser for a new God of War. We also got fresh looks at the likes of Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, Resident Evil Village, and Oddworld: Soulstorm.
