Picross, dating sims, and superheroes haven’t historically had much to do with one another. Pixel Puzzle Makeout League looks set to change that when it comes out later this year on Nintendo Switch and PC.
Described by developer Rude Ghost as a “comedy/romance superhero adventure”, Pixel Puzzle Makeout League follows Pixel Girl, a superhero whose special power is being able to turn problems into picross puzzles in order to solve them. She’s part of the Puzzle League, a group of puzzle-themed superheroes whose other members serve as potential love interests.
Here’s who players will be able to romance over the course of their pixel puzzle superheroics:
- Sudoku: “the most logical of the group, magical girl outfit was made by a friend”
- Chess: “careful planner, but tends to think in black-and-white”
- Crossword: “rarely gets cross, always has a way with words”
- Piecea: “an alien from the Puzzle Planet who wants to get handsy with you… wait…”

This announcement comes amid a growing—and exciting—trend of story-driven picross games. Last week saw the release of Murder by Numbers on Switch, and the last few years have seen the likes of Picross Quest, Picross Luna, Picross Mon, Picross Zenia, and numerous others across a variety of different platforms.
Pixel Puzzle Makeout League is due out in northern summer / southern winter 2020. It was initially announced for PC last year, and is now confirmed for a Switch release as well.
