Heartfelt metroidvania Reina & Jericho announced for Switch and PC

Matt RyanBy Matt RyanOctober 22, 2020

If you like exploration-centric platformers (aka metroidvanias) and emotive, story-driven games, you’re going to want to keep an eye out for Reina & Jericho. This “touching metroidvania from Reclamation Games following a woman’s time bending journey to save the love of her life” comes to Switch and PC next year.

Reina & Jericho sees Reina fighting her way through a mysterious mountain fortress under despotic rule to save her lover, Jericho, and uncover the mystery of his disappearance. Thanks to a powerful artifact she carries, Reina is able to travel back in time and use her newly-discovered tools and abilities to explore previously impassable areas—a time travel twist on the backtracking that’s so often at the heart of a Metroid-style game.

“Metroidvania games are among my favorites, and I’m taking my chance to add my contribution to the genre,” said Dave Wightman, Reclamation Games Founder and CEO. “Powerful stories will always be king for me, and that’s what I’m seeking to do here. We want to create an intense, action-packed platformer that never forgets its narrative and centers that element.”

While the heartfelt story is clearly a focus for Reina & Jericho, it will also have a speedrun mode and a built-in randomiser to mix up room and item placements for new adventures.

Here’s the overview of Reina & Jericho from its Steam page:

Reina and Jericho is a single-player adventure game with a focus on story and exploration.

Caught unprepared, unarmed, and unknowingly carrying a powerful artifact, Reina must find and master the tools she needs to battle through the mountain fortress of an evil tyrant and search for a way to save a prisoner trapped within.

Find powerful artifacts through exploration or by defeating adversaries. Travel back through time to previously impassable obstacles and overcome them with the knowledge and abilities Reina has acquired. Create the perfect chain of cause and effect.

    Features

    • Intense action sequences amplified by powerful upgrades and combat abilities let players approach fighting in their own personalized style

    • Witness a touching story about love, loss, and finding the strength to push forward influenced by player choices

    • Solve time-bending puzzles that rely on Reina’s ability to judge cause and effect

    • Randomizer and speedrun modes provide endless replayability

    Find a way.

Reina & Jericho is bringing its metroidvania action to Switch and PC, with a planned release in Q2 of 2021. It’s got a Steam page live and ready for wishlisting, if you want to keep an eye out for it (and show some support to the developers in the process).
