Atelier Ryza 2 gets its first English trailer

Matt RyanBy Matt RyanJuly 30, 2020

Koei Tecmo and Gust have shared the first English trailer for Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends and the Secret Fairy, alongside the launch of the game’s official website.

Taking place three years after the previous game, Atelier Ryza 2 opens the door to a new adventure for Reisalin Stout (aka Ryza). She’s found a new home in the Royal Capital of Ashra-am Baird and a passion for exploring ancient ruins and looking for the truth behind ancient “lost legends”. Ryza’s joined by a mysterious, fairy-like creature called Fi, and reunites with old friends like Klaudia Valentz, for a story that “paints a picture in colorful brush strokes of discovering what is truly important to you.”

The trailer also offers a glimpse of some of the new features that we’ll see in Atelier Ryza 2. The game seems to be giving exploration a bit more of an action-adventure twist with things like swimming, vine climbing, and swinging around with what looks like a magical whip. According to the website, you’ “learn new abilities as you progress through your adventure to access new areas within mythical ruins, hidden across the fields and deep within dungeons.”

Atelier Ryza 2 was first announced last week, as part of Japan’s version of the Nintendo Direct Mini partner showcase (between this and Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, Japan really got the better deal with that Direct). It’s due out this northern winter / southern summer, and according to producer Junzo Hosoi (via Siliconera), Gust is aiming for a simultaneous worldwide release—a first for the series.

The previous game, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness and the Secret Hideout, came out last year, and went on to become the best-selling game in the whole Atelier series when it passed the 420,000 mark in April. With a wonderful protagonist like Ryza at the helm, it’s not hard to see why, and the success was no doubt helped by Atelier Ryza‘s efforts to streamline the series’ core systems and telling a bigger, more dramatic story than the slice-of-life stuff we usually see.

Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends and the Secret Fairy is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC this northern winter / southern summer.
