It’s been more than three years since the last issue Saga, but Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ widely (and deservedly) praised sci-fi epic will soon be back from hiatus. The double-length Saga #55 is due out on 26 January 2022, kicking off a new arc after #54 ended things with a major cliffhanger back in 2018.
Saga tells the galaxy-spanning story of Alana, Marko, and their daughter Hazel, as they live on the run for the crime of loving each other despite being from different sides of warring extraterrestrial factions. From that base, it sets out on an exploration of humanity, love, sex, parenthood, the impact of war, and social reflection, all within the confines of an adventure that’s moving, action-packed, funny, uplifting, and heartbreaking in equal measure. It’s received no shortage of praise since it debuted in 2012, and has won numerous awards, including 12 Eisners and 17 Harveys—it’s no exaggeration to say Saga is one of the best comic books of all time.
Which made its indefinite hiatus after issue #54 came out in July 2018 hard to swallow, as understandable as it is for Vaughan and Staples to want to take a break and focus on other things. That issue brought the first half of the story to a close, and a 108-issue run has long been the plan for Saga, so we knew it would resume at some point—not that that’s made the wait for news any easier. But now, finally, we have a date to look forward to, and one that’s not too far away!

“Other than my own family, collaborating with Fiona Staples on Saga is the most important thing in my life, so I can’t thank readers and retailers enough for their patience,” said Vaughan. “I think our next 54 issues will be even more shocking, strange, and spectacular than the first 54, so we can’t wait to be back on the shelves at your local comic shop soon.”
Staples added: “I’ve really missed connecting with readers through the pages of Saga, so I’m thrilled to roll up my sleeves and dive into this world again. The next arc is already going places I never imagined. I’m so grateful that we’re able to keep doing this!”
Issue #55 will bring Saga back with a double-length, 44-page issue, “without variant covers or gimmicky renumbering. Just more pulse-pounding adventure, heart-wrenching character drama, and gloriously graphic sex and violence, as Saga begins the second half of the series and the most epic chapter yet.”
If you haven’t tried Saga yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out—regardless of whether you like comics or sci-fi. There’s nothing else quite like it, and you’ve got a few months between now and January to work through the nine volumes that are out already.
