Want to write for Shindig? We’ve got budget for a few freelance posts each month, and we’d like to hear your ideas.
Our rate is $20 USD per article. It’s not a lot, we know, but it’s what we can afford as a relatively small site. It’ll also be a chance to build up your writing experience and portfolio, and to get feedback and help from an editor with many years experience. It could also be a chance to experiment with new styles of writing and coverage of different things, if that appeals to you.
At Shindig we very much believe in letting people write what they want to, in their own voice; to that end, we don’t really have strict editorial guidelines for you to conform to. If you want more in-depth editing or help with a piece, we’re happy to give it.
We’re particularly interested in getting pitches for the TV, film, comics, sections. That doesn’t mean we won’t hear pitches for other sections, though, or even for something that doesn’t have a section at all! If your piece broadly fits within the sphere of “pop culture”, then it has a potential home at Shindig.
We especially want to hear from women, people of colour, queer people, and people with disabilities. Your voice is important, and we want to give you a platform.
Shindig is based in New Zealand, but we’re open to writers from all over the world.
If you’re interested, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you’re sending a pitch, please include “Pitch” in the subject line (and a couple of writing samples, if possible). Even if you don’t have any ideas pinned down, feel free to get in touch and we can talk things through.
We look forward to hearing from you!
